Thousands of Cars, 2 Birthday Dinners, and 1 Stressed Out Driver

Yesterday I drove in Houston, Texas traffic. For the first time. During rush hour. Need I say more?

Let me rewind a bit. Halloween is doubled as my longest friend's birthday. Yesterday was the first time I could go down and see her. Since she lives in Galveston now (and I didn't want her to drive far for her own birthday dinner) we made plans to meet at the Olive Garden in Friendswood. But, what I failed to realize was that yesterday was also my brother's birthday. So when he invited me for a "free dinner", what he really meant was that he was inviting me to the family birthday dinner. The sarcastic look on his face when I turned him down saying that I had a friends birthday dinner that I couldn't miss made complete sense. Score one for the bad sister award.

So now I had to somehow make it to both dinners. Luckily I was meeting up with my friend right after work, and my brothers dinner wasn't till 8-9ish. It was possible to make both of them, and that's what I intended on doing. Which leads me back to the traffic.

Just in case you are lucky enough to have never driven in Downtown Houston, like me before yesterday, it sucks. SO BAD. There are so many highways, overpasses, underpasses, left exits, right exits, left and right exits AT THE SAME TIME, lane merges, lane closures, forks in the road after forks in the road, and not to mention, the thousands of other cars that are all trying to get somewhere as well. Not fun.

Now, as if that wasn't bad enough, I had to drive it in my car, which overheats after sitting still for too long...I was clearly in the wrong place at the wrong time. Getting to Friendswood was important to me, I really really didn't want to miss out on dinner with Jourdan so, although I warned her I might need to turn around and reschedule if my car got too too bad, I tried my luck. I payed close attention to my temperature gauge to make sure that I was doing ok, and when it started inching up I switched the A.C. to heater and put it on full blast in hopes to suck the heat from the engine out and buy myself some more time. And it worked!

But despite my window being rolled down, it was so hot and stuffy. Even though you may think its almost winter, in Texas it is surly not.

Andddd for icing on the cake, my right blinker doesn't work. Not very cool (or safe) when you are in traffic, the sun is in your face blinding you and everyone around you, and you need to get over. So I got to do it the good old fashioned way for Houston. I cut cars off, unintentionally though and I felt awful for it.

Oh, and if that's not enough for you and you want to add some sprinkles to that cake, I have more for you. On the way back from friendswood, my gps "lost signal" right before 2 back to back forks on the highway. Awesome huh? Thankfully I called Javi and he helped me find a street to exit and follow till I reached where I needed to be. And I'm also thankful for that car phone charger I bought right after dinner with Jourdan "just in case" I got lost and my phone died...I think I jinxed myself by buying it, but oh well!

But I achieved what I wanted. I made it (safely) to both dinners! Score 10 for Tiffany!

Until next time,
Tiffany <3

"You gotta be bad, you gotta be bold, you gotta be wiser.
You gotta be hard, you gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger.
You gotta be cool, you gotta be calm, you gotta stay together."
- Des'ree "You gotta be"

This song came on the radio yesterday while driving, and it calmed me down in a way. It's really stupid, so i'm not going to explain, but for some reason this is a really inspirational song to me. It gets me in a good mood when i'm down, AND it's one of my favorite songs to work out too. I listen to lyrics when I work out, so slow songs don't slow me down as long as the lyrics are good (the usual rock and rap songs don't really do much but upset me, even when working out)....I'm weird, I'm aware!
